Director's Biography

Craig’s spent the last 15 years directing some of Australia’s best loved and most outrageous comedians, including over 100 episodes of television for the likes of The Chaser, John Safran and Lawrence Leung. Since leaving Clemenger Melbourne in 1998 to start his directing career, Craig’s work has won the Australian Directors Guild Award (Best Music video 2010), six AFI awards and three Rose d’Or Festival nominations along with 19 music video awards for the smash hit ‘Northcote – So Hungover’. Craig has a solid reputation for comedy within the TV commercials world. His sense of comic timing and intuitive casting is reflected in every single TVC that he directs.

Race Relations is an 8 part comedy documentary series created for the ABC. Despite as much preparation as possible, working with John Safran on Race Relations required a lot of improvised directing as each location brought unexpected challenges and opportunities. The series was shot in 12 countries including Togo, Israel, Palestine, The Netherlands, India and Japan. The series concludes in The Philippines with John being physically nailed to a cross. Nails go through his hands and feet.

This won Best Music Video at the 2010 Australian Director’s Guild Awards, The American International Film Festival, The Los Angeles Cinema Festival, and The California International Film Festival. It also has over 300,000 hits on YouTube. The fact that it takes the piss out of hipsters and includes some cameos certainly helps.

Directed by Craig Melville and Al Morrow the challenge with this spot was to capture the energy and character of New York City and to make it look beautiful with only a small, fast moving crew.  Being able to secure veteran cinematographer Steve Fierberg as DOP (who shot Entourage) certainly helped. The other challenge was having to use real people (non actors) to deliver fun, natural performances.
